to swallow, to rise, to build, to forget

weeds scramble up the steep hill
grasping, taking hold of the gravestones
tearing them out of the ground, turning them over
and water runs across the stones
and features are blurred, vanish,
disintegration starts
disguised as something natural

so much is called natural;
it’s natural, this distrust we feel
or this forgetting of certain things
this celebrating of certain things
that I am me and you you
separated by this border
by the natural fact of separation
invisible impassible inarguable
it’s natural that the pressure builds
that there are these outbursts of violence
these burning buildings
these smashed windows

do you know where you are now?
you’re slipping back and forth in time
along the hill’s gradient
stinging weeds slick mud and mosquitos
rising in clouds clouds clouds

here in the flat and rolling land
the endless earth must rise
to swallow these dead
to swallow the ones that
remember the dead
to swallow the places that hold
the dead
to swallow, to rise, to build, to forget

is it time passing
that creates this distance between
events and experience
whose time?
mine stopped
even before I was born
mine was extinguished here
my time was a broken stone
buried in a mudslide
strangled by weeds.
